As the Snow Moon hit fullness at 5:32 am. I headed to South Park in an attempt to capture the moonset and sunrise simultaneously. Navigating our snow-packed roads, I embraced solitude as I outpaced other early risers bound for the slopes on this perfect mid-winter weekend.

Snow Moon Over Mosquito Pass

Timing these events is part art, part science, given our proximity to the mountains. Finding a proper location is paramount. Once in the park I set up overlooking an unnamed peak near Mosquito Pass where I could witness the full moon descend towards the mountains. Fierce winds tested me and my gear, but my resourcefulness prevailed as I secured the tripod with my gear bag and just beside it found refuge in my vehicle.

Snow Moon Over Mosquito Pass

The full moon peacefully settled over Mosquito Pass in the inky blue skies of twilight as the orange glow of morning illuminated the horizon behind me —a truly tranquil scene of dual celestial events. The resulting images are blends of two exposures, revealing details of the moon’s surface. Carefully color graded to evoke the cold, crisp winter morning around me.
