Last year around this time I was exploring Bryce Canyon National Park. As I went through my catalog today, I found these images from that early morning.

Dancing Aspens

It was darker than these shots suggest as I made my way down the trail, headlamp on and gear in tow. I hadn’t scouted the route beforehand, so I was feeling my way in the dark, solo and, as far as I could tell, the only one on the trail.

Stars still dotted the sky as first light brushed the horizon. I was hustling to reach a good spot for the sunrise over Thor’s Hammer, but I’m glad I paused to capture a few moments like these.

After some time other early risers joined me, some hiking deeper into the canyon, others simply soaking in the morning light. Their quiet company added to the experience in a way I hadn’t expected – and appreciated.
